Hundreds of Cats Rescued from Alleged Theft Ring in Vietnam

Major Cat Theft Operation Uncovered

Vietnamese authorities, in collaboration with an animal welfare organization, have successfully dismantled an alleged feline theft ring, rescuing more than 400 cats that were reportedly destined for slaughter. Nine individuals have been apprehended in connection with the operation, which police described as a "criminal group specialising in stealing and collecting cats."

Details of the Rescue and Investigation

Last week, raids conducted in Tay Ninh Province and Ho Chi Minh City led to the recovery of over 400 live cats and approximately 80 deceased animals preserved on ice. An additional 21 cats were seized from a separate location. The consumption of dog and cat meat is permissible in Vietnam, provided vendors possess permits verifying the animals' origin.

The investigation commenced on June 11 after police in Ho Chi Minh City began looking into a surge of pet thefts. Suspects reportedly admitted to trapping and collecting cats across southern Vietnam over a three-year period. According to investigators, the stolen cats were transported to holding facilities before being sold to traders every two to three days.

Reunions and Ongoing Efforts

Humane World for Animals confirmed on Tuesday that around 40 of the rescued cats have since been reunited with their owners. The organization commended the local authorities for their "decisive action" but noted that some animals had unfortunately died due to the ordeal. They are currently providing food and supplies for the cats remaining in police custody as evidence for the ongoing case.

Police have urged residents who suspect their pets have been stolen to come forward to assist in identifying the recovered animals.

The Broader Issue of Cat and Dog Meat Trade

Humane World for Animals estimates that approximately five million dogs and one million cats are stolen, trafficked, and slaughtered for meat in Vietnam annually. The organization highlights that pets are frequently taken from homes, often using methods such as poisoned bait, tasers, and iron pincers for dogs, and spring-loaded snares for cats.

While the consumption of dog and cat meat is more prevalent in Vietnam compared to some other Asian nations, campaigners suggest that public attitudes are evolving. A 2023 survey, commissioned by Humane World for Animals, indicated increasing public opposition, particularly among younger demographics and pet owners, with a majority supporting bans on both the dog and cat meat trades.
